Ultreia St. Jacques is een single vineyard wijn. De wijngaard ligt ten westen van het dorp Valtuille de Abajo in Bierzo. In tegenstelling tot een aantal andere robuuste, aardse Mencia wijnen, heeft deze in kleine hoeveelheden geproduceerd wijn een jeugdig fris karakter waarbij met name de krachtige smaken van de druiven goed tot uitdrukking komen.
Op dronk, maar kan zich tenminste tot 2028 nog verder ontwikkelen.
Het woord "Ultreia, of Ultrya" werd door pelgrims gebruikt die al sinds de 3e eeuw door dit gebied trokken op weg naar Santiago de Compostela. Met "Ultreia" (dat zoiets betekent als "gaat voort") moedigden zij elkaar onderweg aan om hun doel te bereiken.
Raúl Pérez is één van de beste Spaanse wijnmakers en behoort tot de wereldtop. Raúl is ervan overtuigd dat grootse wijnen hun basis hebben in de wijngaard en heeft een niet te evenaren feeling en vaardigheid om vast te stellen hoe speciaal geselecteerde wijngaarden in staat zijn om grootse wijnen te produceren. Zijn talenten hebben ertoe geleid dat over de hele wereld steeds meer wijnmakers samenwerking met hem zoeken.

The biggest volume of the winery is the 2021 Ultreia Saint Jacques, which represents some 170,000 bottles, and according to Raúl Pérez, it's the most difficult wine to make here. They now work a lot to produce this wine, a blend of 11 wines selected from the 17 they made. It's a wine that represents Bierzo and is from a year when they used more grapes from sandy soils. It has 13.16% alcohol and a pH of 3.66; it's serious and restrained but juicy and easy to drink. Seventy percent of the wine matured in barrel and the rest in troncoconic oak vats.
Raúl Pérez has purchased 90% of the vineyards used for the La Vizcaína project, which gives him a lot more control over viticulture. They produce around 300,000 bottles, 60% of them Ultreia Saint Jacques.
2021 is a super clean and defined vintage, quite transparent for the soils and the places, with very fresh and balanced wines. Some of the Ultreia wines showed a little more oak and might need some more time in bottle.
